The Author was determined to refrain from adding to his family's financial problem in the days of the Great Depression and set about at an early age to find employment wherever it might be. This entailed hitchhiking and "riding the rods" throughout the Western States in a never ending search for virtually nonexistent work, and toiling intermittently at a plethora of interesting part time jobs. Hence the sobriquet: "Jack of All Trades." He eventually joined the U.S. Army prior to the draft and served over five years throughout World War II, doing time in the South Pacific during the Guadalcanal Campaign. He retired as an officer in Military Signal Intelligence, and landed a job in Sacramento's Fire Department where he spent seven years dodging disasters and surprising the Grim Reaper. He finally left the Department to pursue a lifetime ambition-and despite all odds succeeded in becoming a world entertainer, doing over ten years with the Hand Balancing Duo: The O'Dell's, working TV and Theatres throughout the United States, Canada, Europe and N. Africa, entertaining no less than four world leaders in the process-featured at one time in the World Famous "London Palladium" with Rosemary Clooney.
