Imagine, if you can, leaving your warm flat, with the hot meal still, uneaten, on the table, on an extremely cold winter's night, in December 1944, around the time of Christmas, leaving your Christmas presents, with few possessions and lacking identity papers, to travel on foot in your warmest clothes, from East Prussia in Germany, to trek to the Baltic Coast. For this is what happened to a young, eight year old German child, Paul Cieka, escaping with his mother Lydia, from East Prussia as the advancing and extremely hostile Soviet Army was marauding eastwards following the defeat of the German Army at Stalingrad in Russia..This journey, through East Prussia, with the intention of visiting grandparents, which was hindered at every turn by retreating German troops and vehicles and the advancing Red Army, took the Ciekas some eight months of very challenging travel with some horrible experiences that no adult should have to witness never mind a child of eight years old. All this took place before they were allowed entry into Denmark, on board a German Minesweeper. The Ciekas, like so many German refugees, were soon to find out that Denmark was not a country which was overly-friendly to German refugees and if the Ciekas thought life was to be much better under the Danes, then they were severely mistaken. The four years Paul and Lydia were together in Denmark saw them the 'guests' of several refugee camps, with major restrictions on their movements, often only with very basic accommodation and unsanitary living conditions and few possessions to call their own. This was until 1948 when Paul was given the opportunity, courtesy of The National Children's Home, a UK charity, to move to England, initially on a temporary basis, subject to his father's permission, with a number of other young German children. This is Paul's story, crafted by Richard Ellison from personal interviews which have been supplemented by information from two visits first by the author to Denmark and then to Paul's birthplace of Arys, now Orzysz, in Poland and also with help from a number of contacts. It is a fascinating story, biographical and historical and takes the reader back to the 1930s and 1940s and gives a powerful in sight into a significant period of world history, that of war-torn Europe under Adolf Hitler and the post-war period in Denmark after the victory of the Allies. From 'Arys to Harwich' will provide the reader with a vivid account of a desperate tale that should be told in case it is lost for all time and it will sit alongside other more-well known, but equally horrific stories of the Second World War.
