On April 8, 1903, Cossacks attackked the Jewish people of Kishinev with the goal of eliminating all Jews from Russia and parts of Eastern Europe. The village where Minnie Newman and her family lived was the scene of a bloody pogrom. The family was able to escape without injury, but not without a close call when teenaged Minnie was caught by a Cossack on horseback. The family, and others like them, fled for their lives. The Newmans trekked for fourteeen-hundred miles across Europe through Ukraine, Romania, Poland, and Germany. Six months later, they reached Rotterdam in The Netherlands where they boarded a ship for England, then to the US. Minnie lived to become the matriarch of a family of four daughters and numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren. This story is Minnie's, based on facts and snippets of stories passed down by the family. Some of the accounts are the author's fictionalized versions.
