He leads an adventurous life; fighting the Russians in the Crimea, taking part in the Fenian uprising in 1867 and working with Parnell for land reform and Irish independence. Outwardly successful, he is worn down by a deep sense of personal aloneness and concerns that the increasing religiosity and conformism of his modern world has destroyed all the intimate connections of trust and understanding between members of his own class.
