The current research analyzes the role of protest signs and visual rhetoric as a communicative tool of resistance within social movements. The norms and values represented through protest signs, and the proliferated images that feature these signs on social media, allow for larger discourse regarding societal dynamics and hierarchies to form. The affordances of social media allow for marginalized voices to enter the conversation through the comment sections of social media platforms. The images featured in the posts on social media become catalysts for public discourse, forming new digital publics. With the theoretical framework of scholarly work regarding publics and counterpublics both online and offline, and the history of visual rhetoric within social movements, a visual rhetorical analysis of The Women's Marches of 2017 and 2018 was conducted. The top five posts under the hashtag #womensmarchsigns from both years were analyzed to compare the themes and values that emerged from the movement and how they may or may not have changed in a year's time.
